When I joined 4-H as a fourth grader in 1999, I didn't know that my nine years in 4-H would help me figure out what I wanted to do professionally. In my elementary years I liked doing various Visual Arts projects to hone my creative skills outside of school. When I was in middle school I was introduced to web design and photo editing, and I used the Science and Technology project area to work on my own design projects outside of what I did in school. By the time I was in high school I realized how much I love technology, so I joined the Iowa Youth 4-H Technology Team. Being a part of the tech team gave me so many opportunities to learn about photos and video, social media, and various other technologies. In addition to the skills I gained, being on the tech team gave me networking opportunities I wouldn't have had otherwise.
My favorite project area was Communication. I learned so much about giving speeches and interacting with others through my Communication projects that my peers in high school never had an opportunity to learn. I credit 4-H with giving me so many opportunities to work on my communication skills. These skills are invaluable to me today as a college student. My freshman year Oral Communications professor even took note of the fact that I participated in 4-H as a young person.
Currently I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, majoring in Studio Art (Graphic Design) and working towards a minor in Marketing and Psychology. Without my experience in 4-H I would not have truly developed my skills and determined my career path in technology and design.
