Building Understanding
Outstanding science programs start with a strong understanding of the infrastructure needed for success. Learn more about the logic model, checklist, competencies and inquiry-based learning.
4-H Science Logic Model
The 4-H Science Logic Model displays the program and what the program does, and how the program investments link to results.
4-H Science Checklist
The Science Checklist is used by staff to self assess the knowledge and skills needed deliver programming.
4-H Science Competencies
Science Competencies are the "demonstrated capacities" that are integral for facilitating high-quality learning environments with meaningful educational outcomes. All of the 4-H Science core competency tools are designed to be flexible.
- 4-H Science Competencies
The 4-H Science core competencies identify how 4-H youth development professionals and volunteers implement 4-H Science programs that offer eight essential elements - including the mastery of Science.
- 4-H Science Competency Self-Assessment
The 4-H Science Competency self-assessment tool can be used by volunteers and staff to assess their abilities and then develop a plan for ongoing learning.
- 4-H Science Competency Cards
The competency cards are quick ways to identify key knowledge and skill level and areas. Take the cards with you when you are facilitating or ask your coach or mentor to help you as you continue to improve your own 4-H Science skills. Note - the cards are made to be printed front and back and then cut - then you have two competencies for each card for a total of four cards.

Inquiry Based Learning
Inquiry-based learning is a process of constructing learning through hands-on experiences that provide evidence about phenomena in the world. Tools include a online learning course, videos, and additional links to resources.
Experiential Learning
These interactive online learning modules provide the basics for volunteers and staff to increase their knowledge and skills to target learning outcomes, provide reflection on that learning and integrate the application of it into all activities.
Essential Elements of Positive Youth Development
Each of the eight Essential Elements is vital to the positive development of youth. When 4-H professionals and volunteer leaders intentionally focus on these elements, youth derive long-term benefit from their 4-H membership.
4-H Science 101 Training Guide
The 4-H Science 101 training guide provides four hours of activities that will help introduce your staff and participants to the development, delivery and assessment of 4-H Science programs.
Fund Development Toolkit
The Fund Development Toolkit combines learning modules along with practical tools and resources to enhance your fundraising for 4-H Science, and other 4-H mission areas.
