4-H health, nutrition, and fitness programs help youth understand the importance of eating right, physical fitness, being active and practicing good hygiene. Mastering these basic health principles place young people on the right track to managing their long-term health.  In addition, young people may be inspired to explore an exciting career path.

Eat4-Health is an innovative program to educate youth on health and nutrition through interactive, immersive activities. Teen health ambassadors and 4-H professionals work with local organizations to develop community-focused events through which youth develop positive perspectives on health and nutrition, and learn to make healthier choices.

Obesity has become an epidemic in our country. Since 1980, obesity among children and adolescents has almost tripled. Our society needs effective and proven programs and tools to target this epidemic. 4-H and United Healthcare have partnered to launch an innovative program to engage people at the community level to take on the challenge of living healthy lives.

Through Eat4-Health, teen health ambassadors and 4-H professionals partner with local organizations to develop community-focused events that engage youth in learning about healthy lifestyles. Offering interactive educational activities, youth are guided in developing positive perspectives on health and nutrition - ultimately helping them to make smarter choices.

Eat4-Health program states include Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.

Youth Voice: Youth Choice provides 15 grants to state-level 4-H programs and focuses on developing and enhancing healthy living programs at the community level. The goal is to mobilize youth to take action around three healthy living priorities (nutrition, physical fitness, and safety) and develop and begin implementing action plans.

In 2011, Walmart 4-H Youth Voice: Youth Choice Healthy Living programs were implemented through 15 grants to Cooperative Extension 4-H Programs in 14 states and Puerto Rico for programming occurring between October 2011 – September 2012. Each grantee received $55,500 to reach thousands of youth and their families and to utilize teens as teachers in all stages from planning programs to educating youth, other teens, and adults to address nutritional choices and food security challenges. Many programs focused on high-impact direct reach (long-term intentional programming, i.e. residential camp, Teens as Teachers, gardening) while also engaging the general public (low-impact indirect reach) through health/county/state fairs. The 2011-2012 programming produced significant impact. Over 45,000 youth and adults were reached and given opportunities to empower themselves by learning how to achieve healthier lifestyles. Over one million people were reached through media outreach. In addition to grantee state program media attention, the Walmart 4-H Youth Voice: Youth Choice initiative conducted a successful radio media tour in the targeted 15 grantee states.

Through an expansion during the 2013-2014 programming year, the Youth Voice: Youth Choice program is expected to reach 74,000 youth and their family members in 23 states by focusing on intentional collaborations within the unique infrastructure of the land-grant university Cooperative Extension System. This expansion will further the Healthy Living revolution, by taking key steps that target obesity and food insecurity in hundreds of communities.
